In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
Our VA&R committee has also been very busy. We go to Bonham Medical Center whenever possible. We also make it a point to visit Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham and spend time with the female veterans in the nursing home facility. Our Unit and Juniors have adopted the women and created gift baskets for various holidays. These baskets contain items specifically for ladies including lotion, nail polish, nail kits and such. Each year we also sign birthday cards to be given to the women on their birthday. In addition to taking baskets and cards, they also took items that a local elementary donated for the Veterans and they helped cook hotdogs.
Our biggest success came when we helped the female veterans start a red hats group. Members donated a complete tea set and red hats for them to use when they have their meetings. Members try to attend at least 1 meeting every couple of months and bring treats and crafts for them to do. Their activities director said they see more participation from their residents when we attend. Unfortunately Covid kept us from going over the past year but we are back!
