"We will be strong... we will be great... 'cause we're from Texas Girls State"

The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary began an effort over 75 years ago to devise a means to educate our youth in the duties, privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship; give future citizens, in a realistic manner, an opportunity to learn the problems of government by performing the same duties as real office holders in the everyday world; inform them of the rights and privileges of American citizenship; and instill a deep sense of the personal responsibilities and obligations which this citizenship entails.

The American Legion's participatory program for young men is known as Boys State (interested junior boys can learn more here), and the Auxiliary's program for young women is known as Girls State. There is a Girls State program in every state in the U.S. The Texas program, Bluebonnet Girls State, is one of the most well-respected and prestigious student leadership experiences in the country.

ALA Unit 178 is proud to support Girls State delegates from the Frisco area.

The application window and selection process for 2025 Texas Girls State is underway for the Class of 2026. If you are currently a junior and are interested in Texas Girls State, please contact your counselor.

Interested high school sophomores should contact their guidance counselor in the spring, to express interest regarding the 2026 Girls State program. Your counselor can provide information and instructions for application. The process begins with your HS faculty but if you cannot get information through your school, please contact our GS Chair.

Our selection process and timeline are different from that of Texas Boys State, and different from other Girls State processes around the state and country, so be sure you are relying strictly on information received here, or from your counselor.

If you have questions about the Unit 178 delegation to Texas Girls State, which are not answered at this website or by your counselor, please contact our GS Chair.

We need your support to send great Frisco students to Girls State!

With the explosive growth in our area, more new high schools are added each year to the ALA Unit 178 service area for Girls State each year. We also make the opportunity available to applicants from area private schools, charter schools and home school environments.

Students are not allowed to pay their own way to attend; this is a national and state policy, and ensures that delegates are chosen based on merit, and not on their ability to pay the camp fee. This means that all monies for Girls State sponsorship must come from the community, and we need an ever-increasing amount each year due to demand. It costs about $600 per student to attend the program, which covers room, board, transportation, and incidental expenses.

We desperately need the help of our community partners, to make sure we have enough resources to send at least one student from every high school we cover.

Our goal for 2025 is to raise $15,000, to ensure that we can afford to send every qualified applicant who deserves this unique and prestigious leadership opportunity. You can help, with your tax-deductible donation of $100, $250, $600 or more. Even $50 will make a real difference!

We look forward to welcoming all of our Girls State donor partners to the reception in fall 2025 with our delegates and their families, as they share their experience learning about citizenship, government and public service.
